The 3rd L-LAB Summerschool took place from 19th to 23rd September. The Public Private Partnership L-LAB, a research cooperation for lighting and mechatronics of Hella KGaA and the University of Paderborn, organised this expert knowledge exchange years under the title "Human factors in vehicle lighting". 50 leading experts from all over the world met in the charming ambiance of the "Ringhotel Roggenland" in Waldeck/Edersee. Here they discussed their research activities as well as important developments of automotive lighting techniques. Lighting experts, psychologists ans specialists in ergonomics emphasized again that the particular goals of the automotive industry can only be reached by interdisciplinary research centering on the "human factor". |

As was seen in the previous two years again, the contributions of both, industry and research enriched the international L-LAB Summerschool 2005. Due to the motivated participants the event turned into a prolific exchange of ideas between leading experts and young scientists of the different countries and fields of research. Professor Peter Boyce , Rensselaer Polytechnic Institut, New York, the well-known author of „Human Factors in Lighting“, explained the close relationship between human cognition and the necessary comprehension of effects of different light parameters like e.g. light spectrum and distribution effects on sight range and comfort. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Heiner Bubb, chair of the Department of Ergonomics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, spoke about the question „How does the information reach our brain while driving a car?" In this context, he dwelled on the fact, that perceived information has to be stimulated, before it can be processed in our short-term memory. Since these processes, that happen permanently while driving a car, take a certain amount of time, a situation can only be judged correctly after this short period. |
