Get in touch with future:
L-LAB Days 2006 enjoy great popularity
19th - 21st January 2006 The L-LAB, research institute of the University of Paderborn and Hella KGaA, opened its doors and presented current research projects themed "Get in touch with future". In Addition, the training workshop of Hella KGaA informed about the possibilities of apprenticeships.
On Thursday and Friday, mostly students from regional schools came with their teachers, to get to know the L-LAB. But also employees of Hella KGaA and of the University took the chance to receive first-hand information about the current research in the L-LAB. On Saturday, a lot of related individuals showed their interest to the automotive future.

The particular workgroups presented their work with experimental set-ups, prototypes and tests vividly. Thus, the visitors could check their traffic perception and their ability to peripheral cognition. In the dark laboratory, the human eye was explained and how first brightness differences are noticed before an object will be recognised.
Furthermore a system that can track one's eye movement was presented. It is used, to measure the time the driver gazes on to e.g. a navigation system instead of looking onto the road. A special point of interest was the night driving simulator, where people could "drive" on a virtual track. In addition to these presentations, the visitors had the possibility to listen to several short talks, e.g. about mesopic vision.
What are the ideas for future headlamps and what does "Active Lighting" mean? How important are new materials or new light sources like LEDs for headlamps? How can the vehicle itself avoid a collision? In which situation does the brain trick oneself with optical illusions? So, the visitors could get answers to these and many other questions. |
During the L-LAB Days, the young scientists had the chance to pass on their enthusiasm for doing research on these exciting automotive topics. Hopefully a great number of visitors became infected by their verve and perhaps with some of the younger ones this will have effect on their choice of career.
